KICKIN' IT OLD SCHOOL....

Every gun has a story...

In 2006 I went to a Hunting and Fishing Expo in my local area.  I'm a weak man.  This show was basically a gun show.  Somehow another 1911 followed me home. Seriously, this one will be a keeper.  It is a 1991 A1.  If you aren't familiar with this model, it is basically a plain-jane parkerized Series 80.  Evidently Colt started making this gun in 1991 (duh), and it was supposed to be a lower cost version of the series 80. No slick polished finish, and it had a few plastic parts.  It's parkerized and looks alot like the WWII Springer repros.  There is no lanyard loop and this one has a blued slide stop, instead of parkerized (?).  What really got me interested in these is that I wanted a WWII Colt, but just don't have the dollars for an original in this condition.  When I saw one of these 1991A1's, I thought ...hhmmmmm.  A replica that is actually a Colt.  Now for the transaction story.... I was walking by a table at the gun show and and a big ol' boy had it laying on a dealers table.  They were digging through a gun value guide. I knew that a deal was potentially happening. I gave the courteous "few minutes" while I hung around and checked out the guns in the dealers case. Only after they talked about the value, and the dealer seemed to have no interest in buying it, did I walk up and ask if they had a deal. The big ol' boy was duded up in a big 10 gallon cowboy hat.  No I don't live in Texas.  He had the whole "cowboy" outfit.  He even had the western shirt with mother of pearl snaps and all. We hit it off right away.  He said that he was mostly into single actions (no surprise here) and that this gun was for sale to whoever wanted to pay him for it.  I commented that the dealer gets the first right, it was his table.  The dealer said that he couldn't afford it.  I don't know what their value conclusion was.  B.O.B. said that it was supposedly unfired and that he had taken it on trade. He also said that he was asking $600.  I told him that they bring $500 on Gunbroker and that's what I would pay that for it. I am a natural born horsetrader, but he seemed bashful. He muttered that he would take the offer. The gun is in the box and looks unfired....and that is what I honestly have seen like models go for on GB (this was 2006).  It has laminated brown grips that although are mint, have not grown on me.  Evidently Colt made some WWII repro's in the Early 90's.  I would love to have one but they are $800+ so I decided to make my own.

I added plastic GI-look grips, a checkered milled GI trigger, an arched lanyard loop MSH and a wide spur hammer.  Now it looks right.....Who says that the Robster doesn't like the standard A1 issue 1911's.  This is what my GI Joe carried...!!    Maybe I'll shoot it one day.....
